An excerpt from the Fearless Teaching story entitled: Blessing the Goat

 

...How much will we risk just to seize a “teachable moment” that life serves up?

 

As teachers, we’re not paid to push limits - much. We plan lessons, most typically knowing what end is in store and what’s on the test. We convince ourselves that many students need a reliable formula for successful learning, and that it is up to us to explain to them what’s important. Safe in our classroom, we leave out mystery preferring to seek the known, which is strange if you explore the meanings of words like “teacher” and “education.” But one day on the edge of the Serengeti Plains, we ended up out of bounds, out of that safety zone, and, for a while there, we did not know how to get back in…
